History

During the 1920’s and 30’s the Distillers Company Ltd (DCL) was formed as a consortium, combining together to prevent larger companies making take-over bids against them as smaller individual distillers. Comprised of brand names such as Booth’s, Gordon’s and Tanqueray, DCL achieved its purpose until Guinness bought them in 1986 and created United Distillers (UD) in 1987.

Meanwhile Distiller W.A. Gilbey Ltd. faced a similar situation to the companies who had banded together to form DCL. Rather than joining DCL Gilbey’s managed to survive for a longer period before joining with United Wine Traders in 1962 to create International Distillers and Vintners (IDV). This proved relatively short lived as a decade later they finally lost control of the business when taken over by Grand Metropolitan (GM) in 1972.

Diageo was created in 1997, from the merger of GM and UD, both having a long and rich history in the Drinks Industry. Today this conglomerate sells their products in over 180 countries, and can truly be said to be a worldwide company.
