Brothers Martin & Andy Dawson of Broker’s Gin Ltd. Shepperton, Surrey (and Langley Distillery, Birmingham), England, UK. Imported into the USA by Hood River Distillers Inc., Hood River, Oregon.

Website

Broker’s Gin Ltd. and Hood River Distillers Inc.

History

Established in 1998, this Gin was launched in 2000.

Production

The neutral grain spirit is made from English wheat and is distilled four times. The botanicals are steeped for 24 hours prior to the final redistillation, in a copper pot still named “Constance” (manufactured by John Dore & Co.). All the water used in this process is taken from the underground natural spring on site.

Demonstrating the company’s quirky side, the bottle cap is humorously presented with a plastic cover, shaped as a Bowler (Derby) hat. The label has a gentleman in a suit sporting a Bowler, pocket square and a long rolled up umbrella.

Category

London Dry Gin.

Alcohol By Volume (ABV)

47% (94 Proof) in USA, 40% (80 Proof) in UK and other markets.

Price Range

$$. Available online at: Astor Wines and Drink Up NY.

Botanicals

Made with 10 botanicals: angelica root (Belgium, France or Poland), cassia bark (China or Indonesia), cinnamon (Madagascar or Seychelles), coriander seed (Bulgaria), juniper berries (Bulgaria or Macedonia), lemon peel (Spain), liquorice (Italy or Sri Lanka), nutmeg (India), orange Peel (Spain), and orris root (Italy).

Name

The Bowler (or Derby) hat is quintessentially English and was worn at one time by many London businessmen, especially stockbrokers. Thus “tipping its hat” to its London heritage, the name Broker’s has been used.

Tasting Notes

On the nose is clear juniper and citrus (orange & lemon) with spicy cinnamon, nutmeg and herbal accents. On the palate this smooth oily medium bodied spirit has earthy juniper, citrus and herbs with liquorice. It finishes lightly sweet with a very warm spicy, peppery finish (juniper, coriander and cinnamon).

This is as solid as a London Dry Gin gets! Put this with any classic Gin based mixed drink and it does the job: Gimlet, Gin & Tonic, Martini, Negroni etc. – as a Gin lover you’ll be very pleased. This is well balanced, smooth and at an attractive price point, no wonder this brand continues to rise in popularity. Our Bowler’s are off to the fine Dawson Gentlemen at Broker’s.
