Juniper Green Organic Gin.

History

Thames Distillery is run by Charles Maxwell who is the 8th generation of the family (founders of the Finsbury Distillery) who have been producing Gin since 1700 – making them the oldest unbroken lineage in Gin distillation.

London & Scottish was established in 1993. They launched this Gin in 2000, the world’s first organic London Dry Gin.

Production

The company uses two very small pot stills called Tom Thumb and Thumbelina, the spirit being distilled from rye grain grown without artificial chemicals fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides or pesticides and is 100% gluten free.

Category

London Dry Gin.

Alcohol By Volume (ABV)

43% (86 Proof). Although there was an earlier version at 37.5% (75 Proof), which we used for our tasting notes.

Price Range

$$$ - $$$$. Available in the USA through Altitude Spirits Inc.

Botanicals

It uses only 4 botanicals, all organic: angelica root, coriander, juniper berries and savory.

Name

The name tells the full story of its environmentally friendly values.

Tasting Notes

On the nose is juniper and strong spice notes. On the palate, all four botanicals show through in a balanced way (juniper, herbs and spice) and make for a surprisingly complex albeit light taste. Does well in a Gin & Tonic but make sure it isn’t drowned by the tonic. This is a very mixable Gin although it can be lost if overpowered by stronger flavors.

We have heard from other 3rd parties that the stronger version (at 43% ABV) is bolder and stands up more when mixed – we can’t wait to check this for ourselves. All in all this is a well planed and executed labor of love from Thames Distillery and we applaud Organic Spirits for making this ethical dream a reality for many drinkers. Not to mention the positive impact on our planet, let’s hope many others follow their lead.
