Masons Yorkshire Gin.

History

Created by husband and wife team, Catherine and Karl Mason, this is the first Gin ever to be made in Yorkshire. Established in late 2012, the business was initially called Spirited Decisions Ltd, but this was renamed just prior to launch. Their Gin was launched on World Gin Day in the Summer of 2013, with their first batch sold out within weeks.

The Masons had no prior experience in the world of beverages, yet alone distilling spirits. The closest they’d come was drinking them! However, Karl did start “G&T Friday” a Facebook page dedicated to posting a picture every Friday of a G&T. This has developed into others joining in and posting their own pictures, if you are on Facebook why not join the 12,000 or so people just for fun, they have giveaway prizes to win every week (you must be 18 plus and live in the UK to be eligible). Brief details can also be found online at Gin and Tonic Friday.

Production

The alcohol base is made from sugar beet, rather than the usual neutral grain spirit. Distilled in small 200-liter batches in a copper alembic still, they use Harrogate spring water for blending. They are currently having a still made for them so that they can distil the Gin themselves, which is hoped to be in operation by the end of 2013. The aim is to source as many local ingredients as possible and are already growing their own juniper berries, which they plan to use in 2014. In the meantime, The English Spirit Company is making this Gin on behalf of Masons.

The Gin is presented in a clear, circular bottle with rounded shoulders. It has a large white label, with a slim border around the outside and Masons clearly written in black, and there an heraldic image at the top with a White Rose, the symbol of Yorkshire. Each bottle is handwritten with the batch and bottle numbers.
