Where Men Can Become Better Gentlemen

Melton Mowbray
Sloe Gin

Sloeberry Spirits Ltd., Northfield Farm, Cold Overton, Oakham (Near Melton Mowbray), Rutland, Leicestershire, England, UK.

Sloeberry Spirits.

Melton Mowbray is a small country town in the North East of Leicestershire renowned for it’s food and drink and most notably their Pork Pies and Stilton Cheese – the only place in the world permitted to make them bearing the town’s name. Not far away is Northfield Farm, a producer of quality beef, lamb and pork, with a farm shop, bakery and restaurant onsite. It is also the home of Sloeberry Spirits Ltd. and their hedgerow liqueurs.

The company was established by Rachel Birch in the fall of 2004, starting with Sloe Gin as the only product. She sold the business in the spring 2011 to Andy Hoyle and he follows the same recipes and uses the same fruit from the same locations around Melton Mowbray.  Although originally called Hedgerow Spirits, Andy discovered another business was using this name (who had already formally registered it), and so in spring 2012 the company became Sloeberry Spirits Ltd. Andy is now developing the business further with more liqueurs being added to the portfolio.

Using an undisclosed Gin the hand picked fruit is added and left to infuse naturally over a period of several months. This traditional method allows the fruit flavours to slowly transform the spirit, giving it a new flavors. No colourings or preservatives are required or added.

The resultant Gin is presented in a clear tall thin circular half bottle, displaying its light pink color. It has a large oblong label with rounded corners, the name is at the top and has a tall sketch showing a sprig of Blackthorn with a few sloeberries.

Tasting Notes

On the nose is the light aroma of traditional Gin i.e. pine (juniper) and citrus with floral notes. On the palate this full-bodied sweet spirit has a light cherry-like fruit flavor with soft juniper and citrus. On the close are fruit and floral notes with a short warming finish.

This Gin is quite light on sloeberry flavor yet retains the sweetness expected in a liqueur, whilst traditionalists may find it too light others will enjoy the greater Gin flavor, which pervades throughout. This is designed to be drunk neat as a winter warmer but is equally at home with tonic water to make a refreshing summer time drink.

Tip: Sloeberry Spirits also produce wonderful Sloe Gin Truffles, great to go with Sloe Gin for an after dinner treat. Alternatively why not use this Sloe Gin to accompany the locally produced Stilton cheese.
