Mother's Ruin
Damson Gin

Distillery

Mother’s Ruin, Walthamstow, East London, England, UK.

Website

Mother’s Ruin.

History

After producing liqueurs for years at home for family and friends, Cumbrian born (but now living in the East End of London) Becky Griffiths decided to try her own commercial venture. The business was established in Summer 2012 with products available online. She also has a small retail outlet called “Mother’s Ruin East London Gin Palace” at Wood Street Indoor Market (an old cinema building) in Walthamstow, East London.

The fruit used is handpicked from her East London garden/allotment, from the family orchard in Cumbria or foraged from the surrounding wilds in these two areas of England.

Production

Wild Westmoreland damsons are picked from the hedgerows in the Cumbrian Lyth Valley. The fruit is steeped in an undisclosed Gin for the good part of a year.

The Gin is presented in a small emerald green cylindrical bottle with flat shoulders. The large pink label has very simple black text with a sketch of a sprig of sloeberries and the Latin name “Prunus Domesticas” clearly visible.

Name

Mother’s Ruin is a slang term for Gin in England; it arose during the Gin Craze in the late 1600’s to the mid 1700’s when Gin was so popular and was having a negative impact on society. The Gin is named after this slang term and the key flavored botanical.
