Where Men Can Become Better Gentlemen

SW4 Batch 47 Gin

Park Place Drinks Ltd., Dollar, Falkirk, Clackmannanshire, Scotland (made by Thames Distillers Ltd., Clapham, London, England), UK.

SW4 Gin.

Park Place Drinks is run by Martin Traquair Price, a previous Marketing Director of Drinks Distributor Maxxium, with over 10 years experience in the drinks industry and two decades in Marketing. The company is primarily a drinks distributor but, liking a Gin and Tonic, Martin wanted to make his own Gin with lots of juniper, citrus & spice and so went about contacting potential distillers across the UK. Unfortunately most were unable or unwilling to produce a bespoke base spirit (preferring to use an “off the shelf” one) or in small batches (i.e. wanted to produce high volumes for Martin to purchase), except Thames Distillers.

Thames Distillers is run by Charles Maxwell who is the 8th generation of the family (founders of the Finsbury Distillery) who have been producing Gin since 1700 – making them the oldest unbroken lineage in Gin distillation.

The original SW4 Gin was launched in 2009; this stronger version was launched in summer 2013.

The neutral base spirit is made from a blend of wheat and barley and is produced in a column still and distilled four times. The resultant neutral grain spirit plus pure water are used to steep the botanicals for 12 – 24 hours. Then the 5th and final distillation is carried out in a John Dore & Co. 500-liter stainless steel pot still called “Tom Thumb”, with it’s sister “Thumberlina” on stand-by duty. The distillate is left to rest for an undisclosed period of time before being diluted and bottled.

The Gin is presented in a tall clear rectangular shaped bottle with square shoulders. It has a small black colored label SW4 label and Batch 47 screen printed below.

Tasting Notes

We have yet to try this Gin but we understand this is very similar to the original SW4 Gin i.e. big on juniper and citrus, both on the nose and palate. However, we believe there is a taste difference and the Gin retains its smooth creamy essence despite the higher alcohol level.
