History

Founded in 1782, A.van Wees claim to be the last authentic distiller left in Amsterdam. Right up until 1970 they were still delivering to commercial outlets in casks. Still run by family descendents the commercialism of mass production is shunned to preserve their authentic and cultural Dutch heritage.

Production

Red, blue and black berries are macerated before being distilled.

While the distillery isn't open to visitors, they have a restaurant and tasting room called “De Admiraal” in Herengracht, Amsterdam - ideal for visiting and acquainting oneself with their range of products.

Tasting Notes

On the nose is a strong and powerful aroma of dark fruit. Slightly sweet, on the palate is a strong berry taste.

This is a very different type of Genever and is referred to as Bessen (or Berry) Genever. It is a good tipple by itself and is a perfect pairing to a fruit and cheese platter. This old style berry genever is well worth a tasting.
