This is a rare category of Gin, and some say it is not a classifiable category at all. However, we notice a difference from its production and resultant taste and thus have included it here. So, what is this Tropical Gin? |
Tropical Gin is made from 100% sugar based spirit, not unlike Rum. Typical ingredients for this clear base spirit include sugarcane, molasses etc. Production of the base spirit into Gin follows the same pattern as other Gins – namely distillation and infusion of botanicals, including the all-important Juniper Berries. |
Not surprisingly, it originates from countries where cereal grains are either not cultivated or in short supply – typically countries with tropical climates. With imported grain prohibitively expensive, distillers have relied upon their expertise with sugar to make the base spirit. We have predominately found these Gins produced in South America and in many cases to a low quality (unfortunately) but, we have started to see this improving. |
